Source connect
For quite some time now, at the East Wing we have been using source connect PRO as a viable alternative to ISDN, which has been a faithful servant to the industry for a long time. Times change, however, and Source Connect finally offers a reliable digital alternative.
After some tests with the nice people at source elements in Chicago we are convinced: Source-Connect enables audio connections between digital audio systems anywhere in the world in real time, and it works.
From a client’s perspective the only thing that changes is the price - ISDN requires outgoing call charges and inevitably, they aren't cheap. On the other hand, Source Connect has no connection charge and runs over our fast Fibre Optic internet connection.
And to get technical, rather than using the MPEG Layer 2 coinciding found in ISDN , Source Connect PRO uses a vastly improved MPEG Layer 4 compression at bitrates up to 320kbps.
So all of the benefits of ' down the line' / remote recording, but at a reduced cost to our clients, with an improved quality... It’s a no-brainer.
Source connect is also a great new weapon in out ADR tool kit. A fantastic feature - RTS mode - allows us to join our pro tools project timelines without the need for a complicated timecode set-up as we had done previously. Again simplifying the ADR process for us in the studio and therefore reducing time spent and cost for the clients.
